Today, on #WorldRhinoDay, learn how you can help protect the Sumatran rhino. Only 80 are left in the entire world and they are separated across land and sea on two of Indonesia’s largest islands. They are one of 5 rhino species, and the closest living relative of the extinct Woolly Rhinos. The species is the last of its genus, meaning if it disappears, an entire branch of the rhinoceros family tree goes with it. The Government of Indonesia has launched an emergency action plan to help save the species and @global_wildlife_conservation @rhinosirf @insidenatgeo @WWF and IUCN are leading #SumatranRhinoRescue to save the species from extinction. Learn more about the species and how you can help at sumatranrhinorescue.org 🦏 📸: @joelsartore

#Regram #RG @guardian : "It was an iconic symbol for all the glaciers in Sweden. But we don’t need any more symbols," says Gunhild Ninis Rosqvist, a geography professor at Stockholm University. "We can see the climate changing before our eyes up here, and we need to do something about it.” The southern glacier at Kebnekaisie's summit is known to Swedes as their country's highest peak. But this year scientists discovered it had lost that title having shrunk by almost four metres. Scientists have blamed a 10C increase in summer temperatures and wildfires burning across the Arctic.. . . . . .#glacier #environment #globalwarming #climatecrisis #climatechange #arctic #mountain #Sweden

#Regram #RG @wsj : The number of fires in the Amazon region this year is more than double the 19,229 that burned during the same period last year. But as international leaders raise the alarm about the fate of the planet's most biodiverse forest, many Brazilians say the world is overreacting. Fueling the situation is a defiant president, outraged environmentalists and conspiracy theories over foreigners' plans to take control of the Amazon. #Regram #RG @undp : The Asia and Pacific region is the most disaster-prone region in the world. A two meter sea level rise could displace over 180 million people, mostly across Asia. Indonesia is already planning to move its capital city of Jakarta to Borneo to protect its people from dangerous floods. But many more communities and lives are at stake. In this photo, volunteers are planting mangrove saplings in an estuary in Bali to fight coastal erosion and land degradation in Indonesia. Climate change is the existential challenge of our time. The @UnitedNations #ParisAgreement calls for cutting CO2 emissions in half by 2030 and reach #carbonneutrality by 2050. Getting there won't be easy. We must make dramatic changes to our production and consumption patterns. We're currently working with governments and communities in developing countries across the world to amp up climate action plans for a greener and healthier future for all life on Earth. Please see link in @bakersbayclub bio to donate.
Please support this very important cause. Join me in donating to help protect the natural resources of the Bahamas. #Regram #RG @bahamasnationaltrust : Hurricane Dorian, a massive storm supercharged by warmer air and ocean water almost certainly due to climate change, was devastating to the Abacos and Grand Bahama in the coral island nation of The Bahamas. The nonprofit Bahamas National Trust (BNT ) manages the country’s National Park System. Our mission is to protect the natural resources of The Bahamas. We are leading the recovery of the national parks and supporting park rangers affected by Hurricane Dorian, as well as providing long term natural solutions to mitigate damage from hurricanes and storm swells, such as restoration of mangroves and coral reefs. Please join us in helping restore our beautiful islands and natural biodiversity. Link to donate in Bio. Photo by: @shanegrossphoto
#Regram #RG @guardian : It might come as a surprise to northerners used to grey skies and drizzle, but demand for water could outstrip supply in parts of northern England by 2035 - partially because of the climate crisis. A new report warns that, in less than 20 years, Yorkshire and the Humber could experience water shortages because of significant reductions in rainfall, population increase and failures by water companies to reduce leakage. The Environment Agency has warned that England could run short of water within 25 years.
#Regram #RG @haka_sumatra : Please SHARE the amazing news that the Banda Aceh State Administrative Court has ruled a verdict to revoke the permits for the development of #TampurDam and save 250,000 citizens and the destruction of 4,000 hectares of critical forest! Last week, mako sharks earned the final vote confirming their @CITES Appendix II listing at #CoP18, a critical protection for this endangered species' survival. I applaud @RichardBranson and @OceanUnite for responding to @ShawnHeinrichs ’ alert about #CITES4Sharks and advocating for Canadian Ministers @jonathanwnv and @cathmckennaottcen to switch their votes from “NO” to “YES” in favor of protecting the endangered mako. This is the power of voices from around the world speaking in unity for a healthy and abundant ocean and global leaders rising to put the planet before profit or politics. As climate change continues to heat up our oceans and air, storms like Atlantic hurricanes will only become stronger and more destructive. #Regram #RG @cnn : This aerial footage of the Bahamas shows the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian on Great Abaco Island. Dangerous winds and life-threatening storm surge were expected to continue through Tuesday evening. Dorian was expected to skirt the east coast of Florida as it crawls north.

#Regram #RG @yaleenvironment360 As global temperatures continue to rise, 100-year floods could become annual occurrences in parts of the United States, according to new research published this week. The research, led by scientists at Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, examined flood risk for 171 counties along the U.S. East Coast and Gulf of Mexico. Historically, 100-year floods have been just that — an intense flooding event that happens once every 100 years, or has a 1 percent chance of happening in any given year. But scientists found that 100-year floods will become annual events in New England. In the U.S. Southeast and Gulf of Mexico, counties could experience such floods every 1 to 30 years.
#Regram #RG @brut nature: Good news! Seven eggs from the world’s last two remaining northern white rhinos have been successfully fertilized artificially. A big leap forward that may save these endangered animals. While Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhinos, died last year, two female members of the species are still alive. Najin and Fatu (shown on this photo ) are Sudan’s daughter and grand-daughter. The scientists working on this insemination harvested the eggs from those last two females and fertilized them with sperm from the now-dead last male. #whiterhinos #rhinos #feelgood #natureisawesome #science #tech #endangeredspecies #conservation #wildlife #research #kenya #berlin 📷: Barcroft Media/GettyImages

#Regram #RG @chamiltonjames The real heroes of fires are of course the firefighters. In the Amazon they often work with nothing but machetes and leaf blowers and small tanks of fire suppressant. I worked with a troop of them in eastern Brazil back in 2017. It was tough hot and at times hopeless work. Some of them were Guajajara tribesmen who had dedicated their lives to protecting what was left of their ancestral forests - most had already been logged and burned. Some of them had been murdered for trying. It was brutal and tragic and we should all bow down to them for what they do - for so little money that they have to roll cigarettes with writing paper.
